Your tractor's transmission is at the heart of its capabilities and its mechanical health. Happy transmission equals a happy tractor. While no equipment lasts forever, there are certain habits for using your clutch that you'll want to follow in order to extend the life of your transmission. Follow these tips if they apply to your specific model.

DON'T

  • Don't ride the clutch.
  • Don't use the gear shift as a hand-rest. 
  • Don't run your tractor in too high a gear.
  • Don't rest your foot on the clutch pedal. 
  • Don't downshift suddenly.
  • Don't spike the RPMs. 
  • Don't force gears; take your foot off the clutch, then push the clutch back in and try again. 
  • Don't grind gears.

DO

  • Always throttle down/come to a complete stop before you go forward or backward.
  • Idle down before you change gears. 
  • Know when to change gears (listen/check RPMs). 
  • Change gears quickly/don't linger with the clutch pedal pressed. 
  • Follow the recommended maintenance schedule.
